David Grant
I’m sure you get the humour, irony and scope contained in the title. It’s a jazz show
with great varied jazz but as jazz itself has diverse roots and offshoots the name
gives me room to move with some blues, soul (brothers and sisters), funk, fusion and
more
I have been with Radio Calderdale for almost 12 years. I volunteer as a presenter.
I worked in education for a long time and try to share information and widen the
audience’s sense of the artists, the music, and their interconnectedness. My aim is to
entertain and widen knowledge, understanding and enjoyment whilst providing an
alternative to the mainstream output.
I have a range of interests both physical and cerebral. Jazz autobiographies and
biographies among them. Recommendations from recent readings? Lady Sings the
Blues by Billie Holiday, Beneath the Underdog by Charles Mingus and a good,
thorough biography of Thelonious Monk. Rory Gallagher, the Irish blues rocker, is a
great favourite, and the show contains at least one of his tunes every week. I am
happy that the blues content of the show continues to expand. Other features are
artist and/or album of the week.
Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane and Cannonball
Adderley stand out as personal jazz favourites. With the blues it is Bessie Smith.
I try to keep my ears open and if something new or different catches my attention I
will seek it out and if appropriate I try to share it with the audience.
I like to sit like a satellite of Radio Calderdale somewhere amongst the avant-garde
and as a lone presenter providing most of the material I use the show seems to work
well.
I’m happy, I hope to make my audience happy too.
